When you think about an Olympic athlete, what words come to mind? Perseverance. Determination. Motivating. Inspiring. Overcoming obstacles. Dedicated. Committed. Amazing!
Now, when you think about your own career growth, do you feel the same way? I really hope you said yes! If not, here’s how you can tackle your career just like an Olympian.
1. Get clear on your vision. This is the thing you want most for your life. That you will continue to get out of bed in the morning for each day. That you will jump over every hurdle to get to. What is the thing that is most important for you to accomplish that you are willing to sacrifice short-term happiness for long-term success?
2. Be honest with yourself. I know this can be tough. But you need to identify the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. There’s no sugar coating it. You can’t figure out the best strategy or set proper expectations by lying to yourself about where you truly are. What is your current skill/experience/ability level?
3. Find a coach. No Olympian goes out to win a medal on their own. They talk to a variety of coaches to develop the best strategy for success. They have a support system in all areas: fitness, nutrition, mental and emotional. Who are the mentors and support system in your life? What are you doing to prepare yourself and get the skills you need to reach your goal?
4. Practice a success mindset. Olympic athletes are not immune to the doubts and worries we all carry. In fact, I bet they have more. More fear of failure since so few make it. More fear of a serious life-altering injury. More severe financial and time constraints. But, they don’t let the noise from others or from their own head stop them. That is because they believe they will be successful. If they can believe, why can’t you? Once you believe in yourself you can take the risks and actions needed to achieve your goals.
You have to be the Olympian of your own career, because no one else can do it for you. Imagine what it would feel like to look back at your life in 20 years, even 10 years and say: unstoppable, empowering, encouraging, survived, thrived, accomplished. Amazing!
